International Travel Sales Are the Right Target
Calgary is unique and it’s becoming an increasingly interesting market for outbound travel. Stats show Calgarians want to experience the world.
The metro area has grown beyond 1.8 million people, creating a substantial market for discretionary travel, while Calgary International Airport is giving travelers more direct access to destinations around the world. For Calgary travel agencies, this creates a wonderful business opportunity beyond simply selling more trips as many travel marketing companies might do. It’s about introducing the right Calgarian traveler types to international experiences they may not have been aware of or considered.

The marketing challenge is turning that opportunity into qualified traveler interest while building a distinctive brand position for your company within the Calgary travel market. Your marketing success will connect with the ideal traveler profile for your company and advisors. That’s how we optimize the travel lead funnel.
How will more of the right Calgary travelers will discover your agency?
Which high value destinations and experiences are most likely to attract them?
And how can that interest become worthwhile opportunities for your travel advisors over the next full 5 years?
Those are the kinds of questions a modern, AI-enhanced travel marketing company can help you with. It begins with deeper research, including information from your own business, to understand where you’re succeeding, where valuable leads are being lost and which future opportunities might help strengthen your position in the Calgary travel market.
Calgary Has the Market to Support International Travel Growth
Calgary’s population growth has moderated from its extraordinary recent pace, but the City still forecasts continued expansion through 2031.
There is also a meaningful higher-income customer segment. In the City of Calgary’s 2025 Spring Survey, 26% of respondents reported household incomes between $120,000 and $200,000, while another 21% reported incomes above $200,000.
For travel agencies, however, the real opportunity is not the entire Calgary population. It is finding the sweet spots within your market matched to your agency’s strengths, and available outbound travel opportunities. That is what the Clarity Bridge Customer Insight and Marketing Performance Report for Travel Agencies is all about.

Calgary has roughly half a million residents between 40 and 64—an age range that includes established professionals, couples, families and increasingly empty nesters with the financial ability to invest in meaningful international travel. The city also has more than 218,000 residents aged 65+, a rapidly growing group with more available travel time and a greater tendency to use professional travel advisors for cruises, longer journeys and complex itineraries.
These are particularly attractive prospects for agencies selling substantial international trips.
Your opportunity is to identify travelers with the desire, financial freedom and motivation to travel well—then reach, engage and persuade them while creating a buying journey that minimizes unnecessary drop-off.
The World Is Opening Up From Calgary
YYC provides another reason for travel agencies to pay attention.
Calgary International Airport handled a record 19.4 million passengers in 2025. International passenger traffic increased 6.2%, while U.S. transborder traffic declined 3.4%.
YYC finished the year with 108 nonstop destinations, supported by expanding service to Mexico, Asia and Europe. International connectivity continues to improve, making destinations that once required more complicated routing increasingly accessible from Western Canada.
That creates a marketing opportunity.
Travel agencies don’t have to compete only for travelers already searching for familiar vacations. Strong destination marketing can expose Calgarians to new possibilities, build desire and give advisors an opportunity to turn curiosity into a well-planned journey.

Destinations such as the Amalfi Coast and Kyoto illustrate the opportunity particularly well. Both offer the cultural discovery, distinctive experiences, food, scenery and depth that can appeal to established and retired travelers looking for something more memorable than a conventional getaway—and both benefit from knowledgeable planning rather than simple online booking.
The opportunity is to discover more of these destination sweet spots.
Calgary Travelers May Reward a Different Kind of Message
Albertans also appear to have some distinctive travel preferences.
Alberta Blue Cross research found that 61% of Alberta travelers prioritize new experiences, compared with 53% of other Canadians. Twenty-five percent said they seek off-the-beaten-path destinations, while 22% reported avoiding tourist traps.
At the same time, they’re practical about value. Many are choosing more affordable accommodation, taking fewer trips or traveling during off-peak periods.
That suggests an attractive marketing position:
Memorable experiences that are worth the money.
For Calgary travel companies, compelling content doesn’t necessarily need to shout luxury. After identifying the right international opportunities, you can introduce distinctive destinations, authentic experiences and thoughtfully designed journeys that feel personally rewarding enough to justify the investment.
From Visibility to Revenue
Generating traffic isn’t the objective.
Good travel marketing should create a progression:
Visibility → Destination Interest → Qualified Traveler Interest → Advisor Opportunity → Conversion → Revenue
Search visibility, content, paid advertising, email, destination guides and persuasive visual material all help create early interest.
But lead quality matters just as much as lead volume.
An advisor gains little from spending valuable time with travelers who are poorly matched to the agency, have unrealistic expectations or aren’t ready for a serious conversation. Better targeting and better marketing should help prospective customers understand what the agency offers before they make contact.
It’s understood that the goal is to create better opportunities for advisors, not simply more inquiries.

Greater Access to Growth
Calgary travel agencies have an unusually interesting opportunity and the objective isn’t to market everything to everyone. It’s to identify your agency’s best traveler, destination and experience sweet spots, then concentrate your marketing where the opportunity is strongest.
The question isn’t simply where Calgarians are traveling today.
It’s also:
Where might Calgarians want to go next? Will your agency be the one that introduces them to it?
My role is to help uncover those opportunities and create strategically designed marketing that brings them to life—carrying traveler interest forward toward advisor conversations, bookings and revenue. Calgarians are a unique audience, dissimilar to Toronto or Los Angeles.
